Steve Madeley identifies where ‘horribly disjointed’ West Brom went wrong vs Villa

The Athletic’s Steve Madeley says West Brom looked ‘horribly disjointed’ against Aston Villa during their 3-0 defeat on Sunday night.

Writing during his coverage of the game on The Athletic, Madeley believes Albion got ‘caught between two different methods’, saying: “Albion’s performance has been really poor. Perhaps not surprising, given only 3 sessions under Allardyce, but they appear caught between 2 different methods. Looks horribly disjointed.”

Albion never looked like threatening against Villa and after Jake Livermore’s first-half red card, it was always going to be an uphill task.

The Baggies were perhaps fortunate to only go in at half time trailing by the one goal, with Villa scoring twice late on to round off what turned into a routine victory for Dean Smith’s side.

Early days for Allardyce

Having only been unveiled to the media late last week, Allardyce has had limited training ground contact with his West Brom squad.

However, there were certainly some early indicators of the kind of football we can expect to see from the Baggies over the coming weeks and months.

According to @xGPhilosophy, the home side recorded an x.G of just 0.02 against Aston Villa, as they showed very few signs of attacking intent.
As per Wyscout, West Brom recorded just one shot and had just 33% of possession of the ball.
Defensively, Albion made more interceptions and clearances than they have averaged per 90 minutes in the Premier League against Villa [Wyscout], but Allardyce is unlikely to be pleased with the quality of goals they conceded.
Supporters will be hoping that improvements are going to come with more time on the training ground, but Big Sam’s first game in charge could not have gone much worse.
