'All over the place' - Exclusive: Pundit shares what he noticed about Big Sam in WBA v Villa

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips saw the anger on Sam Allardyce’s face as West Brom lost 3-0 to Aston Villa at The Hawthorns on Sunday night.

Big Sam suffered a humiliating home defeat in his first match in charge of the Baggies, who had sacked Slaven Bilic less than 24 hours after their draw at Manchester City on Tuesday.

Jake Livermore’s sending off didn’t help matters but Albion looked hopeless throughout with just one shot at goal all game [WhoScored] and a woefully low xG of 0.02.

Phillips has blasted West Brom’s defence and attack for their inept performances against Aston Villa in what should have been a game that the players were fired up for as it was a local derby and Allardyce’s first in charge.

“I thought it was a huge game for West Brom in terms of their season and could have been a turning point with Big Sam coming in and a springboard for a mini-revival,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“But it looks like it’s going to be tougher than what Big Sam thought.

“Jake getting sent off didn’t help the cause. Back-to-back players getting sent off in home games isn’t ideal. There are problems everywhere. It’s the last thing you want.

“They’ve got a mountain to climb. You could see by Sam’s reaction that he was very angry. There’s a lot of work to be done on the training ground defensively.

“They’re all over the place defensively and can’t score a goal. I was disappointed.”

We’re running out of words to describe this West Brom team.

It was hard to take the 5-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace but to lose 3-0 to your bitter local rivals is just a sickening blow.

Livermore’s red card was a joke. There’s no way the club captain should be doing something so reckless and stupid in such a high-stakes game.

And yet again, when a player is sent off, the heads drop and players just cannot seem to bring themselves to try.

Yes, there’s a massive lack of quality in this squad of players but there are too many with pea-sized hearts. Hardly any of them seem to care about this club.

But when the captain is doing something as mindless as that, it’s easy to see why that’s an issue.

In other West Brom news, this Albion loanee has had his temporary contract terminated early.
