‘It has been a strange season…’ – Mark Lawrenson predicts West Brom v Liverpool
Mark Lawrenson doesn’t think that Sam Allardyce will secure another win at Anfield when his West Brom side face Liverpool this weekend.
Allardyce was the last opposing manager to win a Premier League game at Anfield back in 2017 but Lawrenson can’t see this result being repeated as he tipped the Baggies to lose 3-0.
While doing his weekly predictions for BBC Sport, Lawrenson claimed that he doesn’t expect Albion to improve until the transfer window opens.
He said, “It’s hard to make a case for West Brom to get anything out of this one but it would help matters if they can keep 11 players on the pitch this weekend.
“I am sure new Baggies boss Sam Allardyce will get that message across to his players pretty quickly but, in terms of results, I am not expecting to see them make much improvement until the January transfer window opens.
“Big Sam is the last man to win at Anfield in the Premier League, with Palace in April 2017, but I don’t see a repeat result for him here. I know it has been a strange season, but come on! 3-0”
Some Baggies fans may consider 3-0 a decent scoreline considering the Reds demolished Crystal Palace on their last league outing as Jurgen Klopp’s side won 7-0.
Bearing in mind that Albion lost 5-1 to that Palace side in the not too distant past, few West Brom fans will be looking forward to the festive trip to Anfield.
A decent result for Allardyce would be an improved performance from his players after the disappointing Monday night defeat to Aston Villa.
Some players may be fighting for their future as the January transfer window approaches and any players who Allardyce doesn’t think are up to the task that faces Albion are sure to be cut loose.
Keeping 11 men on the pitch would be a start at Anfield as Liverpool are one side who really don’t need a one-man advantage.
In other West Brom news, this Albion loanee has had his temporary contract terminated early.
