Steve Madeley shares fitness update on West Brom player ahead of Liverpool clash

The Athletic’s Steve Madeley has provided a fitness update on West Brom ace Sam Field, with the Baggies midfielder still out of the first-team picture.

Tweeting ahead of Sunday’s meeting with the Premier League champions, Madeley confirmed that Field has been in action for the club’s U-23s as part of his recovery.

Field has been out of action since the beginning of October and has been a huge miss in the West Brom squad.

As he edges closer to his long-awaited return, there have been some contrasting reports surrounding his fitness.

Sky Sports claimed that he could have been back in the squad for the victory against Sheffield United back at the end of November.

However, that was not to be and he still remains out in the cold at the Hawthorns.

Just the player Big Sam needs

It is a huge shame that Field is not back in time for the Liverpool game at Anfield, as he could have slotted perfectly into Sam Allardyce’s starting XI.

The new Baggies boss is heading to Anfield with no recognised or standout name to start as the holding midfielder.

It is a role that is of course normally fulfilled by club captain Jake Livermore, who was sent off against Aston Villa last time out.

The England international begins the first of his three-match ban against Liverpool and it leaves Allardyce with a decision to make.

Semi Ajayi has been suggested as a potential solution for the Baggies in what could be a makeshift midfield at Anfield.

Allardyce was less than impressed with Livermore following his red card against Villa, so there could be an opening for him there during the second half of the Premier League campaign.
