Chris Lepkowski moots potential West Brom swoop to sign Brum-born striker in Jan
Former Birmingham Mail journalist Chris Lepkowski has earmarked Watford striker Troy Deeney as a potential January signing for West Brom.
Speaking on The Liquidator podcast (28/12/20), Lepkowski claimed that bringing in a new striker will be among Sam Allardyce’s top priorities when the window opens in a few days.
On potential signings, Albion expert Lepkowski had a very specific style of player in mind: “I can see a Troy Deeney kind of player coming in – possibly even Troy Deeney because we do lack that player who can maybe not only hold the ball upfront but still have something left in his legs and can bring something in terms of a personality to that team.”
Birmingham-born Deeney has been linked with January moves to the Premier League following Watford’s struggles this season.
The striker saw himself caught up in the sacking of Vladimir Ivic, amid reported discipline issues in the squad.
One last Premier League chance for Deeney
Watford are in the play-off hunt this season as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League. However, there are no guarantees that the Hornets will be the ones going up at the end of the season.
Deeney, who earns a reported £65,000-a-week, will be 33 by the time the new season rolls around and if Watford do not go up this season, you have to wonder if Premier League teams will come calling once again in the summer.
January could represent his last opportunity to play Premier League football, but leaving Watford may also tarnish his legacy at Vicarage Road.
Deeney certainly knew how to find the back of the net in the Premier League – he hit double figures in five of Watford’s six seasons in the top flight.
He also recorded 21 Premier League assists, so as Lepkowski referenced, his ability to bring others into play could make him a very valuable addition to the Baggies squad.
