‘I take full responsibility’ – West Brom player apologises after horror show v Leeds

West Brom midfielder Romaine Sawyers has apologised after scoring an own goal against Leeds United on Tuesday night.

Sawyers passed the ball into his own net just nine minutes into the game against Leeds as the Baggies went on to lose 5-0.

It was the worst possible start for Albion and Sawyers took to social media after the match to apologise for this woeful mistake.

After the game, Sawyers tweeted, “I take full responsibility for setting the tone for what went on to be a difficult night for us all to stomach!

“We have to continue to try and put things right as individuals and as a team to achieve what we want to this season.”

This apology may do little to ease the worries of Baggies fans who are concerned that their club is heading for an immediate relegation back to the Championship.

Sawyers and his teammates can apologise all they want but the only way to make amends for their recent poor performances is to improve on the pitch.

Albion face Arsenal, Wolves and West Ham over the next few games in the Premier League and fans will be wanting to see a significant response following the hammering by Leeds.

Sam Allardyce will also want to see more from his players as he decides who is worth keeping in the fight to avoid relegation.

Baggies fans will appreciate that Sawyers has owned up to his error but that is the bare minimum he should do after severely hampering his side’s chances of getting a positive result on Tuesday night.

Things need to change for Albion and they need to change quickly.

We need to see improvement on the pitch rather than apologetic social media posts that players use to try and absolve themselves from blame.
