‘My understanding is…’ – Reliable journo details update after West Brom transfer talks claim
Sheffield Star reporter Alex Miller has played down suggestions that West Brom are in talks to sign Sheffield Wednesday attacker Josh Windass.
It was reported earlier in the week that the Owls forward was in talks over potential moves to join either the Baggies, Bournemouth or Watford.
The Daily Record claimed that Windass was eager to join the Premier League side, with the forward earmarked by Sam Allardyce as a potential January recruit.
Wednesday are currently in limbo near the foot of the Championship, with former Albion boss Tony Pulis recently sacked from the job after just 10 games.
No deal would make sense
For Watford or Bournemouth, Windass might represent a potential bargain given his Championship experience – however, the rumours may have certainly caught West Brom supporters off guard.
Windass has never played Premier League football and never particularly thrived in the second tier in truth.
The player’s average WhoScored match rating in the Championship this season is telling, with Windass recording a 6.48 overall so far.
All of which made the rumours linking him with a move to the Hawthorns slightly confusing.
Some of the names being linked with moves to Albion in the January window include Cenk Tosun, Dan James and even Troy Deeney.
While they all may vary in quality, one consistent is top-flight experience and lots of it in the cases of Tosun and Deeney in particular.
Signing Windass to guide the Baggies out of trouble would have been risky and uninspiring from both the club and Allardyce.
