West Brom scouts watch breakout EFL star ahead of January – report

West Brom have sent scouts to take a look at Grimsby Town centre back Mattie Pollock, according to a report from The Telegraph.

With the January transfer window just days away, more and more names are starting to be linked with a switch to The Hawthorns.

Pollock, 19, is experiencing a breakthrough season at League Two outfit Grimsby, making 17 league appearances so far this season.

His form has caught the eye of West Brom and Fulham, according to The Telegraph, as Sam Allardyce looks to strengthen his defence.

Pollock is out of contract in the summer but The Telegraph claim that there is an extension that Grimsby can trigger to keep the defender at Blundell Park for another year.

It is doubtful that Allardyce would want to sign Pollock to help in the Baggies’ survival fight as he is still relatively inexperienced and the Premier League would be a huge step up from the fourth tier of English football.

Allardyce’s side has conceded nine goals in his first three games in charge as the defence looks to be the main problem area for the Baggies.

It is doubtful that a 19-year-old who has no top-flight experience is the answer to that problem but Pollock is having a great season and he could develop into a quality player.

Money is tight at Albion right now but if the Baggies can pick up Pollock for a small fee then it could prove to be a tidy bit of business.

Pollock has three league goals from centre back this season as he uses his six foot three-inch frame in both boxes.

Albion’s priorities lie elsewhere as they will look to sign players who can immediately help the club in their relegation fight.

Pollock doesn’t quite fit this bill as he looks to be a signing for the future but the Baggies need to secure their immediate future before making pre-emptive signings.

In other West Brom news, the Baggies may be trying to sign one of the Championship’s in-form wingers.
