West Brom remain keen on PL defender despite reported financial doubts – reliable journo
West Brom remain keen on bringing Mamadou Sakho to The Hawthorns in January in a deal that could take two forms, according to transfer expert Alan Nixon.
Athletic journalist Steve Madeley reported last week that the Baggies were interested in Crystal Palace’s Sakho but there were doubts raised over the cost of any deal that would see the 30-year-old join Sam Allardyce’s side.
Nixon has now claimed that Albion are still keen to complete a deal for the out of favour defender and the transfer could take numerous shapes.
On Twitter, Nixon said, “West Brom. Keen on Sakho at Crystal Palace. Loan or paid-up/free. Allardyce had him at Palace.”
Sakho is out of contract in the summer but he would be unable to sign a pre-contract agreement as Albion and Palace are both English clubs.
A loan move is possible but Palace may not want to help strengthen another Premier League relegation rival.
This report proves that the Baggies are going to have to be creative with the limited funds available in January.
Albion may have to cover the wages of Sakho if he was to join on loan but Madeley’s report claims that the defender is being paid a six-figure weekly wage at Selhurst Park.
This isn’t ideal for Albion as it is unlikely that they will fork out huge wages for a player who may only be around for a few months.
One thing is for certain, West Brom have to strengthen their defence if they are to have any chance of staying in the Premier League this season.
Allardyce knows Sakho from his time at Palace and the former France international has plenty of Premier League pedigree.
Signing Sakho could be a good move if the right deal is agreed between the Baggies and the Eagles.
The last thing we need is another costly addition who offers very little in our relegation fight.
