‘Excuses’ – Finance expert accuses Big Sam of using Brexit as ‘Smokescreen’ for WBA failures

Kieran Maguire has accused Sam Allardyce and West Brom of making excuses for using Brexit as reasons for transfers collapsing.

Big Sam claimed that the Baggies have already failed to make three signings this month due to new rules – some that finance expert, Maguire claims have been around for long enough.

Premier League clubs are now not allowed to bring in players from European Union countries without a work permit, according to the new rules.

Speaking on the Price of Football podcast, Maguire believes that Allardyce’s Brexit claim is bizarre and simply a smokescreen.

“Now he comes out and says that he has three players lined up and we can’t recruit them due to Brexit, but these Brexit rules have been in the public domain for a number of months,” he said.

“Unless he’s been living in his shed for the past three of four months, I just find it bizarre. Surprise that after another defeat, Sam comes out with yet another excuse.

“The Brexit rules apply to all clubs, so West Brom are no better or worst off in terms of their ability to recruit in the market. To try to use Brexit as a smokescreen for West Brom’s mediocre results does seem like he’s trying to get his excuses in early.”

Maguire has really gone to town on Allardyce here, and maybe we can forgive him for the fact that he has only just come back into management with these rules.

It is clear that the Baggies need signings, but it is hard to imagine that they had three players lined up – our business is never conducted that swiftly.

The Telegraph reported on Wednesday that Big Sam won’t be able to spend more than £2million on players anyway, so these deals can’t have been that defining on our Premier League hopes.

Allardyce is known for bringing in experienced players who know what the Premier League is like, so we don’t believe that Brexit will have too much of an effect on his plans – starting with Robert Snodgrass.
