Reliable journalist shares update on West Brom star as Baggies close in on signing
West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone will remain at the club despite the Baggies being close to signing Andy Lonergan, according to journalist Joe Chapman.
Chapman explained on Thursday that Albion are close to signing the former Liverpool goalkeeper which caused some worry among the Baggies fanbase.
Johnstone has been linked with a move away from The Hawthorns by The Sun in recent days and Lonergan’s signing had West Brom fans putting two and two together.
Speaking on Twitter on Thursday, Chapman said, “Albion are indeed close to signing Andy Lonergan, though the deal isn’t completed yet.
“Though have been told that Sam Johnstone isn’t going anywhere.”
This will come as a huge relief to Baggies fans as Johnstone has easily been the club’s best player this season.
Joseph Masi of the Express and Star later reported that it will be Jonathan Bond who leaves Albion this month.
Johnstone has made more saves than any other Premier League goalkeeper this season and without him, Albion’s predicament could be even bleaker.
It is doubtful that Johnstone will leave this January as, due to his importance, it should take a hefty bid to secure his services.
Johnstone is one of the few players who could leave The Hawthorns this month that Albion fans would actually be bothered about losing.
In recent weeks we have seen players give up and show no effort as the club got battered by Leeds and Arsenal.
Johnstone looks like one of the few players who actually cares and his departure would be a terminal blow to our survival hopes.
This update is a welcome piece of good news as Baggies fans are left wondering why Sam Allardyce has decided to sign another goalkeeper while transfer funds are thin on the ground.
