Athletic journalist details update on West Brom pursuit of £100,000-a-wk PL defender
Mamadou Sakho is unlikely to become a West Brom player during the January window with the Crystal Palace man proving to be too expensive.
According to a report from Dominic Fifield in The Athletic, the player’s wages, as well as a possible loan fee that could come with a deal, would simply be too much for the Baggies this month.
Writing in the report, Fifield explains: “Sakho earns over £100,000-a-week at Palace and that salary, combined with the loan fee Palace would seek, would take him out of West Brom’s reach.”
West Brom and clubs in Ligue 1 are believed to be interested in the player who is out of contract at the end of the season.
Sam Allardyce is reportedly keen to snap him up, having previously worked with the Frenchman at Palace, but that now looks unlikely.
Money to be spent elsewhere
It remains to be seen if Palace would be open to paying for some of the defender’s wages, but if they were not and Albion had to cover a large portion or all of the £100,000 a week – that would make him the club’s highest earner by some distance.
According to Sportac, Charlie Austin’s £70,000 a week make him far and away the club’s top earner.
Amid reports that the Baggies are prepared to spend upwards of £15million on Joshua King this month, it is crucial that the club spend their money wisely.
While Albion have the worst defensive record in the league, they also need to address their lack of goals if they want to pull themselves out of this relegation fight.
Only Burnley (9) and Sheffield United (8) have scored fewer goals than Albion (11) this season and with just two in their last five league games, it is something that desperately needs to be addressed this month.
