‘Relegation avoided’, ‘Bizzare’ – Many PL fans react to ‘extraordinary’ WBA move for PL winner
West Brom have completed their first addition of the January transfer window, signing Andy Lonergan on a free according to Sky Sports.
The veteran goalkeeper is expected to act as a back-up with Jonathan Bond rumoured to be leaving.
Robert Snodgrass is also set to sign and that has led this move to fly under the radar somewhat.
As a result, it has caught many Premier League fans off guard.
Lonergan has previously been contracted at rivals Wolves as well as Liverpool, where he picked up Premier League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup medals.
He may not have a Premier League appearance to his name but he is well known amongst multiple sets of fanbases.
But unfortunately for the 37-year-old, his unwanted top-flight record is likely to continue.
Sam Johnstone has featured in every league game so far and with David Button acting as his deputy, Lonergan may find minutes difficult to come by.
As such, this deal has left several supporters a bit puzzled, although we’re not sure why signing cover in the goalkeeping department is such a surprise.
A number of tongue-in-cheek comments are being made at Albion’s expense, with a selection of tweets shown below.
