‘Get rid’, ‘He needs to go first’ – Many West Brom fans want 29y/o sold after shocker v B’pool

West Brom fans have urged the club to sell Romaine Sawyers after the midfielder failed to impress in the FA Cup defeat away at League One side Blackpool on Saturday.

Sawyers, 29, came off the bench in the second half but struggled to have an impact for the rest of normal time and extra time before Albion were beaten 5-4 on penalties at Bloomfield Road.

Since returning to The Hawthorns in 2019, Sawyers has not won over the majority of West Brom supporters with many worrying about his displays last term when the club was chasing promotion from the Championship.

His woes have, unsurprisingly, continued in the Premier League too despite the midfielder starting 13 of West Brom’s 17 top-flight fixtures.

While you can forgive a player for being out of his depth in the Premier League, there are no excuses for struggling to perform against a mid-table League One team like Blackpool.

According to stats by Wyscout, Sawyers completed 90 per cent of his 48 passes at Bloomfield Road but of the 43 he completed, just 11 of them went forward.

He failed to complete, or attempt, any passes into the penalty area and made just three passes into the final third.

The ex-Walsall player also lost the ball eight times in his 67 minutes of game-time and won just one of five defensive duels.

Sawyers was outclassed by players two tiers below the level he’s playing in and Albion fans on Twitter are now calling for the 29-year-old to move on.
