West Brom officials putting together finances for Jan deal, 30y/o wants assurances – report

West Brom officials are putting together the finances to sign Rennes midfielder Clement Grenier in January, according to the Sun.

Sam Allardyce has identified the 30-year-old as a playmaker who can offer much-needed quality at the Hawthorns in this Premier League survival bid.

Grenier will need to persuaded to agree a deal on the Baggies budget – something he doesn’t want to be lowered should they be relegated.

The 30-year-old is available to leave Rennes this month for free, despite his contract not running out until the end of the season.

Grenier has been playing for the French club, but still looks set to leave with the Premier League an attractive proposition.

Big Sam is plotting what this report calls a “major overhaul” – something that is clearly needed given our latest form in all competitions.

Grenier has made 14 appearances this season, including five in the Champions League, scoring in his latest outing against Lyon in a 2-2 draw.

As much as we hate to say it, the Hawthorns and West Brom can’t be an attractive proposition to any player at this stage of the season.

The Telegraph reported recently that the Baggies can’t spend more than £2million per player this month, making this free transfer more possible.

In doing this, it could massively affect them past this season.

Finances are clearly tight, and Grenier coming in on big money this month could backfire, as they could be set to be paying Premier League wages in the Championship should the worst happen.

Allardyce needs to be certain with this one.
