Report details staggering windfall Allardyce could earn if West Brom stay in PL
A clause in Sam Allardyce’s contract could see the West Brom manager receive up to £10million in 18 months, according to the Daily Mail.
Allardyce was appointed as Slaven Bilic’s successor on December 16 after Albion’s slow start to the season and the one-time England managers was supposed to oversee a Premier League survival charge.
However that has not gone according to plan with the club winless in Big Sam’s first five games in charge and looking like sure-fire relegation candidates.
Allardyce is already under pressure but the Daily Mail have reported he could stand to make up to £10million if all performance targets are met, something which seems unlikely given the side’s precarious standing in the Premier League table.
If he can inspire the team to survival, though, Allardyce can look forward to a jackpot as he will receive a percentage of West Brom’s Premier League prize money if they stay in the division, as well as a six-figure bonus for every place they finish above 18th.
The figures are capped at £10million but these are still dizzying figures for Albion fans to hear with the club seemingly strapped for cash in the January transfer market and rooted to the bottom end of the Premier League.
Survival hopes look slim
These staggering sums are dependent on the success Big Sam can deliver this season and for that reason it seems unlikely that he will ever attain those sorts of figures.
Albion are only six points behind 17th placed Brighton with more than half of the season to go but it is the sheer lack of quality and desire produced by the team this season that makes it so hard to back a survival bid for the Baggies.
The only Premier League victory of this campaign was a barely deserved win against bottom-side Sheffield United, and the Blades recorded their first win of the season against Newcastle United on Tuesday and now sit just three points behind West Brom with a much superior goal difference.
While his popularity among the fanbase resides very low at the moment if Allardyce does conjure up a surprise survival fight then many supporters simply will not care about the money he stands to make.
It is all about staying in the division and the riches that come with that and so, in that sense, talk of bonuses are irrelevant, particularly at this stage of the season.
If Albion do the unthinkable and stay up fans will be happy to shake hands and walk away from Allardyce.
If not, well, words will be less kind for Big Sam.
