Startling statistic details mammoth task ahead for West Brom at London Stadium
West Brom will have to defy the history books if they are to claim all three points when they visit West Ham on Tuesday evening.
Fresh from a morale-boosting and crucial win at Wolves on Saturday, Albion will be looking for their first successive victories all season as they travel south to face an in-form Irons side that are unbeaten in their last five matches.
If they can overcome David Moyes’ side then they will put to bed an historic hoodoo that has cast a spell over them for decades.
According to OptaJoe, via The Athletic’s Steve Madeley, Albion have failed to register a single Premier League victory when they have played on a Tuesday.
That is a quite staggering statistic that spans 29 games and it is the most played by a Premier League side on a specific day of the week without a win, with the Baggies managing 13 draws and 16 losses so far.
That is an ominous sign for Sam Allardyce and his side but then again so was their record before the short trip to Molineux on Saturday, and look how well that turned out.
Decisive derby win lays the foundations
It might be a concerning thought for Albion fans and statisticians but Big Sam will not care one jot about the history books when he sends his side out at the London Stadium on Tuesday.
Of more importance to him will be the character and fight displayed on Saturday in a battling win against Wolves, and much of the same, if not more, will be required if they are to take maximum points against West Ham.
The Irons have not conceded a goal since December 27 coinciding with the inclusion of former Baggie Craig Dawson in the starting XI.
In his four matches thus far they have kept clean sheets in all with West Ham sat comfortably in ninth, five points clear of Arsenal who occupy the top position in the bottom half of the Premier League.
Their last three games have ended 1-0 in their favour and that is the statistic that will be keeping Big Sam awake at night as he plots a way past Moyes’ miserly defence.
If they can breach that backline then it will go some way to posting a positive result against a side that has struggled the other way with the Irons only scoring five goals in their last six games.
