Report: Joseph Masi provides transfer update on potential West Brom move for Dwight Gayle

West Brom are not going to make a move for Newcastle forward Dwight Gayle this month, reports Joseph Masi.

The Chronicle suggested last month that the 31-year-old was on Albion’s radar, but Masi has now ruled out a move.

There is a week remaining in the window however, and with no new striker arrival as yet the journalist suggested that the situation could always change in the coming days.

Gayle is out of favour in the north-east currently and his contract expires in the summer.

Why the delay?

Masi’s update should be treated as a positive, but we can’t help but feel slightly concerned with our transfer progress over the last few days.

We have seen Albion pull out of a bid for Haris Seferovic while there seems to be no new defender on the horizon.

It seems we can rule out signing a new spine for our team.

That may not be too surprising, but a failure to add an attacker would be, as it would likely guarantee relegation.

Our need for goals is clear given we have scored 15 in 19 league games, and have been left short of options following Charlie Austin’s departure.

Five players have left the club this month, so there should be some money available to boost the squad.

Mbaye Diagne, for example, only requires a £710,000 loan fee.

The club is at risk of making a signing out of desperation, and Gayle would fit that mould.

Sam Allardyce has failed to address our weaknesses, particularly at the back with 19 goals conceded in seven games, and it is unlikely he will find a solution with the current players at his disposal.

We find it all very frustrating, and Big Sam is probably feeling the same way.

In other West Brom news, fans have been left fuming following a recent transfer update.
