‘Instant Baggies legend’ – Exclusive: Pundit wowed by one West Brom player
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has dubbed Matheus Pereira as an instant legend at West Brom after he scored twice against Wolves in the Black Country Derby.
Pereira, 24, scored his second and third Premier League goals as the Baggies won 3-2 at Molineux and has since added a fourth goal when he netted in the 2-1 defeat to West Ham.
Phillips believes that if Albion players like Pereira can play like that more often then it could help Sam Allardyce dig the club out of their relegation scrap.
“If West Brom want to escape and get out of the position they’re in, they need these sorts of players to step up to the plate or for someone to start making a name for themself and getting the goals,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“Pereira’s done that and he looks a totally different player. He became an instant Baggies legend after scoring two against Wolves and he carried that into the West Ham game, scoring a goal. Unfortunately, West Brom didn’t get a good result.”
Pereira showed in the Championship last season that he can be a real force to be reckoned with in English football but had struggled in the Premier League until that match against Wolves.
However, anyone who scores a couple of goals in blue and white stripes while playing against Wolves is always going to be heralded as a hero by supporters and that confidence could be massive for the Brazilian ace.
He’s got big games coming up and we hope he’s able to continue showing everyone why he’s such a key player at The Hawthorns.
With his form getting better, it could also help iron out the issues in his protracted contract talks.
In other West Brom news, there’s been a big update on the ownership mystery at The Hawthorns.
