‘Retire’, ‘Embarrassing to watch’ – Many West Brom fans tear into ‘useless’ player v Man City

It was a night to forget for West Brom on Tuesday as the team capitulated to a 5-0 home defeat against Manchester City.

There were a number of underwhelming performances, but Romaine Sawyers’ shocking display has earned him considerable criticism from fans.

It has been a long time coming, too, with some supporters suggesting his run of bad form stretches back a year, to when he began to dip in the Championship.

Man City were clearly a class above at The Hawthorns and were good value for their win, but Sawyers’ contribution gave them a helping hand.

The 29-year-old received an abysmal WhoScored rating of 4.7, making zero interceptions and only two tackles.

That highlights his inept performance, as he provided no protection for the back four and allowed City to run riot.

Fans have lambasted the midfielder for his lack of effort and a reluctance to make a tackle, which directly contributed to the heavy defeat.

It will be interesting to see how Sam Allardyce reacts to Sawyers’ showing, and whether he will drop the player for the next game.

And it’s a big one, a six-pointer against Fulham on Saturday.

From the discussion taking place, it is clear that supporters do not want to see him in the starting XI.

Here is some of the reaction to Sawyers’ performance on Tuesday.
