View: Awful Big Sam stat shows leaky West Brom could be in line for unwanted PL record
Sam Allardyce has failed to organise his West Brom side and they are on course to break the record for most Premier League goals conceded in a season.
Big Sam was brought to Albion to instil a more disciplined and defensive approach to a side that were lacking in Premier League experience.
He is famed for his structured sides who do not appear pretty on the eye but keep things secure at the back.
However this has been the total opposite during his tenure so far at The Hawthorns.
According to Duncan Alexander, the football statistician who has amassed a large following of over 75,000 Twitter followers, West Brom are on course to eclipse the Premier League record of goals conceded currently held by Swindon (100 in 42 games in 1993-94).
By his calculations Albion would concede 119 goals over a 38-game period given Allardyce’s current rate in charge.
Can it get any worse…
The 5-0 hammering at home to Manchester City on Tuesday evening made it 22 let in over just seven games so far, over three per game.
After 20 games West Brom have shipped 48 goals which means under Allardyce’s current rate they will breeze past Swindon and secure an unwanted Premier League record.
There are 18 games left so even just using three per game as a guide would mean at least 54 goals to take them to 102.
Given Albion’s deficiencies in front of goal which have seen them scored just 15 times in the Premier League so far this campaign, a figure better than only Sheffield United and Burnley, their defensive failings indicate they are doomed for relegation to the Championship.
When Big Sam was appointed no Albion fan expected sparkling football but what they did demand was results and an end to the constant shipping of goals.
Instead they have watched the side dip further down and seen an avalanche of goals let in past the helpless Sam Johnstone.
