‘Not good enough’ – Sky Sports pundit blasts West Brom duo, highlights key weakness
West Brom continue to struggle under Sam Allardyce and that has led one Sky Sports pundit to question whether he can pull off Premier League survival.
Gerard Brand discussed Albion’s current predicament on Sky Sports’ Pitch to Post podcast this week, and highlighted what he thinks is a key flaw in the team.
Much has been made of West Brom’s defensive frailty after conceding five at home to Man City, but Brand is more concerned by the attack.
He identified the reasons why as well as explaining what the team must show in order to avoid relegation.
He said [1:07:30], “They’ll [West Brom] need nous and feeling and team spirit to stay up because I’d seriously question whether they have the actual quality of personnel to stay up.
“Lack of firepower has really cost them this season.
“I know Sheffield United are rock bottom but statistically West Brom have been the worst side in the Premier League in an attacking sense by quite some distance.
“They’ve created 112 chances, the fewest in the league by a distance.
“Callum Robinson has had 12 shots in 18 games, Grady Diangana has created four chances in 15 games, it’s not good enough.”
Diagne impact
West Brom are reportedly close to adding a new attacker to their ranks – Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne.
Getting him through the door will be a big lift but it seems the 29-year-old faces a tough ask to provide the goals needed.
That is because we simply do not possess the creativity or quality to create chances for the front-man.
Robert Snodgrass was signed to address that issue but has only managed an average of just 0.5 key passes across the two games he’s played [WhoScored]. That’s admittedly a very small sample size so we’ll give him a chance.
We are worried about the lack of service Diagne will receive, as he’s not the sort of striker who’s going to make chances for himself.
We desperately need another midfielder before the window shuts.
