Exclusive: Pundit tips West Brom to make last-ditch swoop for Leicester centre-back

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

West Brom should take a look at signing Wes Morgan from Leicester in the late stages of the January transfer window, according to Kevin Phillips.

Morgan, 37, is out of contract at the end of the season and has struggled for game-time at the King Power Stadium this season with the Jamaican centre-back earning just nine appearances in all competitions.

Although he’s currently injured, ex-Albion and Leicester striker Phillips believes Morgan would be a solid addition to Sam Allardyce’s defence at The Hawthorns.

When asked with defenders West Brom should look at signing, Phillips told West Brom News: “I think he’s injured at the moment but someone like Wes Morgan. He’s got that Premier League experience, he’s won it and he’s got that respect.

“I know he’s getting on a bit but he’s shown when he’s played for Leicester this year that he can still play at that level.

“He jumps into my mind but I think he’s injured for another week or so.

“I know they’ve got Ivanovic there but I think someone like Wes who’s won the league, has been a captain and a leader [would be a good signing].”

Leicester have big ambitions of their own this season with Brendan Rodgers’ side currently in good form, in the top-four and potentially pushing for another Premier League title.

Morgan’s been at Leicester for nine years so we doubt that he would leave six months early, before his contract expires, to join relegation-threatened Albion when he could stay at the club he clearly loves and try to do something special again.

Morgan’s leadership is something that could prove to be invaluable at The Hawthorns because Big Sam’s squad does lack players like him.

However, we simply don’t see it happening in the final hours of the January window.

In other West Brom news, Albion have made an approach for a player who almost joined Wolves in the summer.
