I can’t believe it – Exclusive: Super Kev shocked by exit talk surrounding West Brom attacker

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips is shocked by reports that West Brom are willing to let winger Kamil Grosicki leave The Hawthorns on a free transfer.

Polish journalist Tomasz Włodarczyk reported last week that the Albion are ready to let Grosicki, 32, leave six months before his contract is due to expire at The Hawthorns.

Sam Allardyce, as quoted by the Birmingham Mail, has also confirmed that “he has already been told if the right opportunity comes up for him he can leave”.

Ex-Baggies forward Phillips cannot understand why Big Sam would be so willing to get rid of Grosicki with the Poland international showing a decent spell of form earlier this month.

However, it did raise question marks in Phillips’ head when the attacker was left out of the squads that lost to Manchester City and drew with Fulham.

“I can’t believe there’ll be anything in that because when he’s played in the last few weeks, he’s played really well,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“I just don’t see it happening, to be honest.

“I could be completely wrong but you’ve surprised me there because I kind of thought, ‘where was he the other night?’. I don’t know whether he’s picked up a knock or something but he wasn’t involved.

“It’s a strange one but I wouldn’t be looking to ship a player out who can create at this stage of the season. I’d want more bodies in to challenge and push each other.

“That would surprise me if he was allowed to go on a free.”

Grosicki’s clearly being moved on to free up the wage bill at The Hawthorns so that Allardyce can sign players in areas of the squad he feels need improving.

Albion have plenty of options out wide away from Grosicki and with the Polish ace turning 33-years-old in the summer, as well as being out of contract, it would probably make more sense to get rid of him than players at the club who have longer left on their deals.

It’s a shame if Grosicki is released on a free because he’s been a decent servant to West Brom in the last year.

He helped us win promotion last season and has put in a couple of good shifts in the Premier League.

However, at the end of the day, he hasn’t been amazing and moving him on is perhaps for the best for the club.

In other West Brom news, Albion have made an approach for a player who almost joined Wolves in the summer.
