‘Little invention’ – Adrian Goldberg questions key Big Sam decision in WBA defeat v Spurs

West Brom fell to yet another defeat in their Premier League clash against Spurs on Sunday afternoon.

Sam Allardyce made numerous big decisions with his selections as Matheus Pereira was dropped to the bench at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Brazilian came on in the second half and made a big difference, but the game was already gone before he could affect the scoreline.

Adrian Goldberg has reacted to that decision, claiming that Big Sam’s tinker-man tactics happened far too late in the 2-0 defeat.

“A big call before kick-off, with Sam Allardyce dropping Matheus Pereira,” he said.

“They had too little invention, too little quality in the final third where that man Pereira just might have made the difference, unfortunately by the time he came on, it was already game over.”

Goldberg is spot on.

Allardyce set up his side to be defensive which does make sense, but it rarely led to the Baggies pushing forward and creating chances.

Spurs’ defence isn’t great, as we proved in the second half with two Mbaye Diagne goals being disallowed, and Pereira really could have been a danger.

In 10 minutes of action, the 24-year-old completed 100% of his attempted passes and one of those was key according to WhoScored, as he caused constant problems.

We suspect this experiment won’t remain against Manchester United, with Pereira surely set to start at The Hawthorns.
