PL & MLS clubs want to sign West Brom high-earner, one bid already rejected – David Ornstein

West Brom left-back Kieran Gibbs looks set to leave at the end of the season when his contract expires with interest from clubs in the Premier League, MLS and Turkey, according to David Ornstein.

Writing on The Athletic website, Ornstein reports that David Beckham’s Inter Miami made an offer for the 31-year-old in the final week of the January transfer window. However, the bid was rejected as the terms failed to suit both the Baggies and the player.

It is understood that Gibbs is one of the highest-earning players at The Hawthorns and the Albion were open to letting the ex-Arsenal full-back leave.

According to Ornstein, Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso was eyed up as a potential replacement but he’s since rediscovered his spot in the London club’s first-team since Thomas Tuchel succeeded Frank Lampard in charge.

Gibbs has to go

It seems a long time ago since Arsenal surprisingly allowed Gibbs to join West Brom.

Since then, the left-back has made 90 league appearances for the Albion, playing roles in both their relegation from the Premier League and also their return from the Championship.

However, in the last year, Gibbs’ injury issues have proven to be a major liability for the Baggies and Conor Townsend has emerged as the first-choice left-back for both former manager Slaven Bilic and current boss Sam Allardyce.

Townsend had never played in the Premier League before this season and just a few years ago, he was playing for Scunthorpe in League.

It’s quite telling that a player with that CV has replaced one with Gibbs’ track-record with both Arsenal and England.

It’s time for him to go.

If anything, we’re surprised that there are Premier League clubs interested in signing the 31-year-old left-back, who’s been a massive letdown this season in the top-flight.

A move to MLS makes more sense for someone who’s struggled with injuries and struggled to show he’s good enough for England’s top-tier.
