‘Treading water’ – Chris Lepkowski makes Big Sam claim after West Brom defeat v Spurs
Despite a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt that spans a couple of decades, Sam Allardyce is out of his depth at West Brom, according to Chris Lepkowski.
The former Birmingham Mail journalist has slammed Big Sam following another dismal defeat on Sunday where the Baggies were outclassed 2-0 by Tottenham Hotspur and looked devoid of creativity or belief.
Allardyce has failed to make the sort of impact that many felt he would and Albion are now 11 points off Burnley who occupy the final survival spot in the Premier League.
Speaking on The Liquidator Podcast [08/02/21] Lepkowski was critical of the Big Sam era so far, saying: “What has really struck me about this whole period, it’s almost like Sam Allardyce has taken on a job that’s beyond him. I really do think he thought we were better than we are, and we’re not.”
He added: “It’s not going to work under him, it’s just not happening.
“Football has moved on a little bit because he looks like a guy that is treading water, he looks like a guy who knows that’s it – it’s gone.”
Where has Solid Sam gone?
It was another dismal defeat that adds to the shocking run under Big Sam.
That’s now 11 games under his reign and a return of just one win and two draws just isn’t good enough.
A manager that is supposed to instil some solidity and structure in a team is doing quite the opposite.
30 goals conceded is nothing short of disgraceful and Albion have now conceded at least twice in a game in all but one of these games (v Liverpool on December 27).
As a team low on confidence and with just 18 goals in the Premier League this season that is a statistic that just sets you up for failure.
The criticism under Slaven Bilic was that Albion had a soft underbelly but if that was the case it has been multiplied by ten under Allardyce.
Starting the likes of Lee Peltier in defence adds to the confusion with yesterday’s game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium just his third in the league this season at the ripe old age of 34.
It all looks like a mish-mash of ideas under Big Sam and the Baggies are going down with a whimper under his guidance, or lack of.
