West Brom fans delighted as Conor Townsend signs new contract

Many West Brom fans have taken to Twitter to rejoice in the news that Conor Townsend has signed a new contract at The Hawthorns.

The 27-year-old has been restricted to 10 Premier League appearances this season after struggling with injuries but that hasn’t stopped him from earning a new deal to put an end to uncertainty over his future with his previous contract set to expire in June.

He has now committed his future to the Albion for a further three years in a move that will see him stay until his 30’s.

He joined from Scunthorpe United at the start of the 2018/19 campaign and was a fringe member of the squad making just 12 Championship appearances but he really stepped it up a notch in Albion’s promotion-winning season.

Townsend played 27 times under Slaven Bilic as West Brom secured second place and a return to the Premier League last season.

The left-back usurped former England international Kieran Gibbs so much so that the club were prepared to let the 31-year-old leave in January before a move to Inter Miami fell through [The Athletic].

One fan has said he is “head and shoulders above Gibbs” while another said he has “proper stepped up this season and first choice LB for me now”.

It remains to be seen which division Albion will be plying their trade in next season but they can rest assured that Townsend will be with them no matter where they end up.
