Graeme Souness baffled by Mbaye Diagne claim v Manchester United
Graeme Souness was left baffled by Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink claiming West Brom forward Mbaye Diagne didn’t commit a foul when scoring the opener against Manchester United.
The Senegalese forward bullied Victor Lindelof to head home the opening goal, something Souness claimed shouldn’t have counted at The Hawthorns.
Hasselbaink disagreed, claiming that he loved the appetite of Diagne to get ahead of the Swede, who was far too static in defence.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game, Souness and Hasselbaink seemed to butt heads over the Baggies opener.
“Lindelof has got to do better,” he said.
“Diagne is all over Lindelof. He will complain that he’s got his hand in his face, it is a foul, but he has to be more aggressive.”
Hasselbaink was then asked if he agreed with Souness, something he appeared to strongly disagree with when analysing the goal.
“No, I love the appetite of the striker.”
Souness was left baffled by Hasselbaink’s response, claiming it was exactly what he expects a fellow centre-forward to say.
“How can you say that?”
It was never a foul.
Should Lindelof have actually defended rightly, he could have been ahead of Diagne, but it was the Baggies forward who was on his toes and in the right position to head home.
The Senegalese international has been a breath of fresh air since his arrival, and his physicality in the final third is something we have been missing drastically.
Diagne deserved his goal, and he should have had more when he missed a golden chance to pass home after beating Harry Maguire this time.
It has been a great start to life at The Hawthorns for Diagne, and who knows what could happen if he continues in this sparkling form?
