We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Matt Phillips could be axed and replaced by Grady Diangana in the West Brom starting line-up this weekend, according to Kevin Phillips.
Diangana, 22, has not played since the defeat to Arsenal on January 2 due to a thigh injury but was back on the bench at Burnley last week.
The ex-West Ham winger didn’t get an appearance in the 0-0 draw at Turf Moor but Phillips believes he’s likely to replace Matt Phillips in Allardyce’s starting line-up when Brighton travel to The Hawthorns on Saturday.
“I would possibly look at bringing Diangana back in. Phillips has had a try and we haven’t got results, Snodgrass came in and results haven’t picked up with him either,” Super Kev told West Brom News.
“Diangana has been missing and he’ll be chomping at the bit to start football matches and show everyone what he can do.
“He might just be that little spark they’ve been missing. It might be a chance to throw him in [against Brighton] and get an hour of game-time. You’ve then got someone experienced like Phillips on the bench to come on, if they’re winning, to give them that discipline.
“It might be a game for Diangana to return and show us what he can do.”
Matt Phillips has been in and out of the West Brom starting line-up this season. The 29-year-old, whose contract with the Baggies expires next summer, has made 22 appearances in all competitions this term but has only started nine times in the top-flight.
Sam Allardyce started Phillips at Burnley last week with Robert Snodgrass injured and as the ex-West Ham winger is still unavailable this weekend, Big Sam could still pick Phillips.
However, Diangana’s return to fitness is definitely something that should be considered.
It remains to be seen how the young attacker will perform as he’s yet to meet expectations since making a permanent move to West Brom in the summer.
But he’s someone who we know can light it up at times and Brighton seem like a team that could be there for the taking after their defeat to rivals Crystal Palace on Monday.
