‘I know what he said’ – Dunk slams Mason after West Brom v Brighton controversy
Brighton defender Lewis Dunk has slammed referee Lee Mason after a controversial moment in their 1-0 loss to West Brom.
Dunk thought he’d scored a free-kick before Mason disallowed the goal as he blew his whistle for the second time before the ball hit the back of the net.
It remains unclear why Mason disallowed the goal because he did blow his whistle before Dunk kicked the ball and the Brighton defender was furious after the game.
“Who knows? It’s embarrassing,” Dunk said when asked about Mason’s decision by Match Of The Day.
“I’ve got to come here and speak about it in front of the camera, why doesn’t he speak about it?
“I know what he said. I said ‘can I take the free-kick?’. He said ‘yes’, I took it and I scored and he gave the goal.
“Massive protests from them [West Brom] and he changed his mind. I’m not really sure [what the explanation was from mason] he wouldn’t speak to me at half time so I still don’t know.”
What a mess.
The only person who knows why the goal was disallowed is Mason and we are yet to have an explanation from him.
Dunk has every right to be annoyed with the referee and we can sympathise with him after the myriad of poor decisions that have gone against us this season.
The defender was no doubt frustrated with his team’s performance too as the Seagulls missed two penalties by hitting the woodwork.
It’s easy to poke fun at Dunk for an interview he will no doubt be fined for but we’ve been there too many times this season to see the funny side of Dunk’s comments.
We can only hope some sense is made of this whole shambolic situation in the coming days.
