Jeff Stelling launches passionate rant over Brighton incident v West Brom
Jeff Stelling has destroyed Lee Mason over his decision to disallow Lewis Dunk’s goal for Brighton against West Brom on Saturday.
Dunk appeared to have equalised in the first half for the Seagulls with a quick free-kick, but Mason and VAR eventually disallowed the goal after minutes of deliberation.
Paul Merson agreed with Stelling, claiming that surely Dunk was entitled to take the set-piece despite Sam Johnstone being out-of-position.
Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Stelling claimed that Mason’s handling of the decision was absolutely “disgraceful.”
“This is a shambles Lee Mason, what have you done?” he said.
“This is a total, utter, shameful, disgraceful piece of nonsense.”
Merson agreed, claiming that surely Brighton should have been allowed to take the set-piece quickly after the foul.
“Now he’s saying he’s blown the whistle twice.
“He got brought down, it was a blatant foul. Now surely you can take it quickly, but there is a whistle – it was great play from Dunk.”
We don’t even know where to start on this one, apart from saying what a joke.
Mason was clearly not paying much attention to the situation, with Johnstone still clearly organising his defence before he first blew the whistle.
To make things worst, he then blew again before the ball it the net – although, this is probably what saved the Baggies as it technically stopped play.
VAR and officiating in the Premier League have been a shambles this season, and this isn’t the first, and won’t be the last situation to unfold between now and May.
