Kyle Bartley has praised Lee Mason for his handling of the incident in an important 1-0 victory for West Brom against Brighton on Saturday.
Lewis Dunk appeared to have equalised with a quick free-kick, but VAR had to get involved in a decision that took nearly four minutes to determine when Mason blew his own whistle.
It’s a decision that has taken the football world by storm, with Baggies fans destroying Mason for his all-round performance at The Hawthorns.
Speaking after the important win, Bartley claimed that Mason handled it well before coming to the right conclusion in the end.
“There was a bit of confusion about their goal from the free-kick but in the end, I think the referee came to the right conclusion and handed the situation well,” he said.
“At another stage of the season we could’ve lost, but luck went our way and you have to be there to capitalise on that.”
The correct decision obviously came in the end, but to say the situation was handled well may be one of the worst takes on it.
Bartley was left enraged at the time of the incident, so the four-minute pause only to determine whether the official had blown his whistle can’t exactly have gone well.
Mason has now been taken off his duties in this evening’s game between Sheffield United and Liverpool with a so-called injury, although we expect it is to take him out of the limelight.
The Premier League have a huge problem on their hands, and it has to be sorted sooner rather than later.
