Ally McCoist: Diagne ‘unlucky’ in West Brom loss v Everton
Ally McCoist claims Mbaye Diagne was “unlucky” to have had his goal ruled out for West Brom on Thursday night as they lost 1-0 to Everton.
Diagne, 29, thought he’d scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the Albion but was flagged offside and a VAR review found his toes were just past the defensive line.
In the first half of the match against Newcastle on Sunday, Diagne headed a shot at goal which was tipped wide by Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
McCoist then discussed his disallowed goal on Thursday, suggesting he was baffled by how marginally offside Diagne was.
“I’ve got to say, I thought he was unlucky the other night. Oh dear me,” McCoist said on Amazon Prime’s coverage of the game against Newcastle [1:18:14].
“It was a lovely finish as well. Everything about it. He executed it beautifully.”
Offside time after time
Diagne’s impressed since joining West Brom but so far, he’s scored just the one goal which came against Manchester United last month.
He has hit the back of the net on three more occasions but all of those have been chalked off for him being offside.
Speaking to West Brom News this week, Kevin Phillips claimed it is something that Diagne can work on in the training ground to stamp out of his game while the ex-Baggies striker suggested it might also just be a phase he’s going through.
Diagne shows that he can get into good areas, bully defenders and also get involved in build-up play.
But his positioning and trying to catch that extra half a yard on a defender has been his downfall so many times.
Before this weekend, stats by Wyscout suggested that Diagne has been offside more times per 90 minutes than anyone else in the Premier League.
It has been an issue but let’s hope it’s not in the second half against Newcastle.
In other West Brom news, this Albion player has seen his company strike a deal with a high-flying Championship club.
