Adrian Goldberg: Sam Allardyce faith in Hal Robson-Kanu is baffling

Adrian Goldberg argues Hal Robson-Kanu is not good enough for the Premier League and is confused at Sam Allardyce’s faith in the West Brom forward.

Robson-Kanu is yet to start a league game this season but Big Sam has brought him on in eight of the last 12 Albion games.

The striker has failed to score or assist in any of those appearances, and Goldberg believes Big Sam has better options to change a game than the Welshman.

He was critical of Robson-Kanu and made reference to the fact he earns £30,000 a week [Spotrac] despite offering little.

On The Liquidator podcast, BBC WM broadcaster Goldberg said, “[Allardyce’s] choice of Hal Robson-Kanu as his default substitution does baffle me.

“Hal Robson-Kanu is a squad PL player at best, he had a good season for us last time out, thanks very much indeed, Hal.

“But he’s quite an expensive player for Albion, he’s an experienced player.

“He’s not quick and I think if you’re going to chuck someone on to try and save the game late on at least Callum Robinson would make a nuisance of himself.”

Time’s up for Hal

Robson-Kanu has been very inconsistent in his time at The Hawthorns so it may be time to move him on in the summer as his contract is up.

He was great at times last season and his 10 league goals played a big part in winning promotion.

However, there is some doubt over his ability to replicate that form next season as he is currently on a terrible run of form.

Robson-Kanu has failed to score a league goal for more than a year now and at 31 he is not getting any younger.

The summer transfer window offers us a great opportunity to get rid of deadwood and start afresh, and the striker’s wages could be better spent elsewhere.

Signing a proven goalscorer is a must and Robson-Kanu has never been that in his career.

If a new manager is brought in he will also be keen to sign his own players, and Robson-Kanu is an obvious sacrifice to make.

As a result, we do not expect to see him at The Hawthorns next season.
