van der Sar sends congratulatory message to Sam Johnstone after England call-up

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone received his first call-up to the England squad on Thursday and Edwin van der Sar believes he was always destined for the Three Lions.

The pair were at Manchester United together and it seems van der Sar remains a big fan of the Albion shot-stopper.

He was quick to offer his congratulations after the news and gave him encouragement on what was a proud day for Johnstone.

He tweeted a message to the keeper, saying, “I always knew that some day you would get in the England squad. Hard work and perseverance pays off in the end! Well done, Sam.”

Friends in high places

Van der Sar was one of the best goalkeepers to grace the Premier League so it is telling that he thinks so highly of Johnstone.

The Albion keeper was only young when he played with the Dutchman at Old Trafford but clearly he always showed potential.

West Brom

He is now fulfilling his promise with us as he has been brilliant this year and well-deserving of his call-up.

Johnstone has won points for us single-handedly this term and is relied on way too much due to our suspect defending.

A return of 115 saves per Kickest shows he is head and shoulders above his compatriots in at least one department this season.

We hope the 27-year-old gets an opportunity on the pitch in the upcoming games as that would be the reward he deserves for his performances.

It would also be good for us as it could add a few million pounds to his transfer value, as an England call-up should enhance Johnstone’s reputation.

In other West Brom news, Gareth Southgate has shared why he almost left Johnstone out of his latest squad.
