Kevin Phillips: Grosicki could be puzzled by being frozen out at West Brom
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips admits he’s surprised that a report has surfaced which claims Kamil Grosicki may have played his final match for West Brom.
Earlier this week, Meczyki reported the 32-year-old winger had jetted out to Poland last week in a bid to get fit in time for international duty.
The Polish news website also added that the ex-Hull man might not play for the Albion again.
Grosicki’s not played for the Baggies since mid-January and was strongly linked with a move to Legia Warsaw in February before the Polish transfer window closed.
But Phillips believes that if he’s part of the squad, he should probably get a chance.
However, the ex-West Brom striker admits that if he doesn’t suit Sam Allardyce’s plans then he cannot really argue.
“It’s only my opinion but when you’re not winning football matches and have lacked that cutting edge, there was a period where Sam could have given Grosicki a try,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“I’ve said before we’re not privy to what goes on at the training ground. Sam has his way and it obviously doesn’t suit how Grosicki plays.
“The player could be sitting there scratching his head and thinking, ‘why have I not been given any game-time when we’re not winning football matches?’. He could be the difference.
“Look at what Jarrod Bowen has done down at West Ham. It took a while for him to settle but once he got a run of games, he’s been excellent.
“Grosicki’s shown he’s got qualities but all I can assume is that he isn’t for Sam and Sam hasn’t got time to mess about. He’s still trying to get results.
“I’m a little bit surprised that he hasn’t been given a run of games to try and change something.”
Grosicki joined West Brom from Hull in January 2020 but has since made just 19 appearances in all competitions with the bulk of them coming from the bench.
He’s made just 10 matchday squads in the Premier League this season for both Slaven Bilic and Allardyce, with neither manager seemingly keen on the Poland international.
Despite his lack of game-time, he’s in the Poland squad and could play against England at the end of the month in a World Cup qualifier.
Grosicki’s also going to be fighting for a spot in the Poland squad at the European Championships this summer so staying in Warsaw and using Legia’s facilities might be more beneficial towards getting a call-up than rotting away at West Brom.
In other West Brom news, Albion have agreed a deal with this young midfielder.
