Steve Madeley claims West Brom missed out on £25m Jonny Evans windfall in 2018

Steve Madeley has revisited the costly West Brom and Jonny Evans error that saw the club miss out on a £25million windfall in 2018.

Evans joined Leicester City in June 2018 as the Foxes activated his £3.5million relegation release clause after Albion were condemned to the Championship.

But it could have been so much more.

Writing on his personal Twitter profile Madeley quoted a tweet stating Jonny Evans only cost Leicester £3.5m after he helped Leicester City to the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

He said: “Yeah. In hindsight, turning down £25m a few months earlier wasn’t Albion’s best bit of business.”

Madeley said in a further tweet that Leicester had bid around £25million six months previous with Arsenal and Manchester City also interested.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing

On the face of it this was a huge error that cost the club many millions.

An extra £21.5million would have done wonders for the club as we launched an assault on the Championship 2018/19 season after Premier League relegation.

That would’ve given us a serious warchest and one that could’ve made the difference as we eventually succumbed to play-off heartbreak v Aston Villa in the semi-finals.

Conversely, maybe that money could’ve been used to bring in a host of players in January to keep us up.

However the reality is Evans was an integral figure in our team and it is hard to be too critical of the club.

Club bosses are often lambasted for selling key players so perhaps some credit has to be given in this respect.

We may have lost out on a fortune but at least it was born out of ambition.
