Steve Madeley: West Brom have made smart move with new sponsorship deal

West Brom have agreed a three-year contract extension with Ideal Heating as the club’s main sponsor and the deal could prove to be a savvy one.

That is according to The Athletic’s Albion reporter Steve Madeley who made reference to the potential of a ban on betting sponsorship looming as justification for its importance.

West Brom confirmed their renewed partnership with Ideal Heating [formerly Ideal Boilers] on their official club website with the deal set to run until the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign.

Writing on his personal Twitter profile Madeley said: “With a possible ban on betting sponsorship in the coming years, they’ll be pleased to have got this deal done.”

Ahead of the game

This is a smart move by the West Brom hierarchy in lieu of the potential pitfalls that could be created by signing up with a lucrative betting company.

The issue of these companies in football has permeated the industry for a number of years now and there have been growing calls to clamp down on their influence.

Whether or not this will be happen remains to be seen.

The EFL’s principal sponsors are a gambling company and all of the current 24 Championship clubs have their shirts sponsored by one.

Chairman Rick Parry recently ruled against a ban [Gambling Insider] but with the UK government conducting a review over the industry in the coming weeks it is an issue that could continue to rear its head.

Tying down a deal with an existing partner in a more stable environment could prove to be one of the shrewder moves made by the Albion hierarchy.

In other West Brom news, Steve Madeley claims Albion made £25m error in 2018.
