Sam Johnstone responds when asked about West Brom future amid transfer speculation
Sam Johnstone has refused to get drawn into transfer speculation and was coy when asked about his West Brom future.
The goalkeeper detailed his delight at being involved with England and acknowledged the chance has come because he is playing in the Premier League.
However, he refused to talk about anything other than international duty, with recent reports suggesting Tottenham were after him [The Sun].
When asked about his West Brom future, Johnstone said per Sky Sports, “That side has been parked a little bit.
“I’m just enjoying myself here for the next 10 days working hard.
“When I get back to the club it’s head down, working hard and back to the games and trying to keep West Brom in the Premier League.”
Staying loyal
It is good to see a player remaining focused on the job at hand and it seems he will still be giving his all for Albion.
He is positive and upbeat about our chances of survival when many have lost faith.
However, we feel he is just being diplomatic and remaining professional, and has probably been advised not to say anything that could upset the apple cart.
This comment of his stands-out though, “I knew deep down that I had to be in the Premier League and playing well to get the call-up.”
That shows he understands what he must do to be involved with England.
Now he has got a taste of international action he could be keen for more, and that increases the likelihood of him joining another Premier League team this summer.
Since we are likely going down we would not begrudge him a move.
He has been excellent for us and is far too good for the Championship – unfortunately we are not currently in a position to match his ambition.
