West Brom boss Allardyce explains his ‘biggest adventure’ in management

West Brom boss Sam Allardyce has explained that learning and adapting quickly in management is the most important aspect to finding success.

The former England manager has coached eight different clubs in the Premier League, the only man to have accomplished that feat, and Allardyce feels that taking advantage of opportunities has allowed him to continue coaching at the highest level.

West Brom appear destined to be relegated this season, and if the Baggies do hit the drop they will be the first side that Allardyce wasn’t able to keep in the top flight.

As reported by the Express & Star, Allardyce spoke about the “adventure” of management, explaining that learning from his mistakes put him on the right path to succeed.

He said: “I think when you start off in the game, you think you can do it but you need an opportunity.

“Then when you get one, you realise you are the man in charge, you have to quickly work out how you can progress your career and bring success to whatever club you are managing.

“You learn from your mistakes very quickly because in the early days you don’t get many opportunities to stay in the game. When you succeed at building a reputation, you can move on and start looking at ways to progress the game.

“My biggest adventure in the world of football was how can we advance the game, what can we do differently, how can we improve, can we do something that’s not been thought of?

“First, though, you have to survive as a manager and then build on that.”

Allardyce has certainly achieved longevity in his career, and perhaps you could put that down to his ability to adapt quickly to the situations that his sides are put through.

He wasn’t able to adapt quick enough at the Hawthorns though.

Honestly it’s difficult to level too much criticism Big Sam’s way because ultimately the players at his disposal just aren’t good enough to comfortably warrant a place in the Premier League, but he’s hardly given his all to keep Albion up.

It isn’t easy hearing him discuss the reasons behind his career successes as we’re on the precipice of returning to the Championship at the first time of asking, and we don’t even know whether he’ll remain with the club beyond the end of the season.

Some could even read his comments as him talking himself and his tactics up in spite of the fact that he is about to achieve his first relegation.

Ultimately it’s tough for us to really care about how and why Allardyce has managed in football this long when we’re left here wondering if he could have done more to save us from the drop.
