West Brom absent as Sheffield and Rangers scouts watch Clarke-Harris hat-trick

Jonson Clarke-Harris has lit up League One this season and he would be the perfect signing to spearhead a West Brom promotion push next season.

Albion are hurtling towards the Premier League trapdoor and relegation back down to the Championship is inevitable.

Therefore the club must start to put in motion their plans for the summer to plot an instant return back to the top division.

Peterborough striker Clarke-Harris could be the ticket to success after smashing his way to the top of the League One goalscorer charts.

A hat-trick in last Saturday’s 7-0 hammering of Accrington Stanley took his league total to 25 and that form has not gone unnoticed.

As reported on Peterborough Telegraph director of football Barry Fry confirmed clubs have been in attendance to scout Clarke-Harros.

“Rangers have been to a lot of our matches this season and they were there on Saturday. Sheffield United were also there, but West Brom weren’t,” he said.

Bristol Live also report that Sheffield United have recently joined the race for his signature alongside Albion and Rangers.

It looks like clubs are beginning to firm up their interest and watch even more closely.

The campaign is starting to reach its conclusion and all three clubs name-checked are in positions where they can fully plan for next season.

Like Albion, Sheffield United are nailed-on to be relegated and therefore can plan a season in the Championship, while Rangers have won the Scottish Premiership to secure a Champions League play-off place.

Current number one frontman Mbaye Diagne is only on a loan deal and a permanent move looks unlikely, particularly given his return of just one goal.

Karlan Grant and Callum Robinson will hope to spearhead an Albion promotion charge next season but they have just three league goals between them this season and they are likely drained of confidence.

The signing of a powerful centre-forward like Clarke-Harris could have a transformational effect on the forward line and he could follow in the footsteps of the man he replaced at Peterborough.

Ivan Toney scored 24 times in 32 outings for Posh last season before making the move to Brentford and he hasn’t stopped scoring since.

A record of 28 goals in 36 Championship appearances shows the step-up between the third and second-tier of English football is not insurmountable and Clarke-Harris could fire in similar fashion.

If Albion’s interest is serious they must wrap up a deal soon or be left to regret their delay.
