Kevin Phillips urges West Brom to keep an eye on Preston left-back Greg Cunningham
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips wants whoever is in charge of West Brom next season to keep close tabs on Preston left-back Greg Cunningham.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a move to The Hawthorns in the past [HITC] and is due to be available on a free transfer this summer when his contract at Deepdale expires.
Cunningham re-signed for Preston from Cardiff in the January transfer window. He’s since made seven appearances in the Championship but missed the last three matches due to injury.
Albion are likely to need a new left-back in the summer with Kieran Gibbs set to join Inter Miami when his contract expires.
Ex-Baggies striker Phillips believes someone as proven in the Championship as Cunningham could be a good signing if his former club is relegated.
“He’s the sort of player who’s played at that level, done well at that level and could slot in [the West Brom squad] without an issue,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“Other clubs will be trying to nick a player here and there to get them into their squads so Cunningham is one who, whoever is in charge at West Brom, should definitely be keeping an eye on.”
Cunningham has made 193 Championship appearances in his career.
He’s also played four times for the Republic of Ireland and had spells at Manchester City, Leicester, Nottingham Forest and Bristol City before recent seasons at Cardiff and Preston.
Conor Townsend has impressed at The Hawthorns since emerging as the first-choice left-back so if the Albion are relegated this season, an experienced Championship left-back like Cunningham could be a clever addition to serve as Townsend’s back-up.
