West Brom keen on Andy Carroll if Sam Allardyce stays at the club
West Brom will be keen on signing Newcastle forward Andy Carroll this summer if Sam Allardyce remains at the club, according to the Newcastle Chronicle.
Carroll will be available on a free agent at the end of the season as he is unlikely to receive another deal from Newcastle after making six starts this year.
Some Championship clubs are monitoring the 32-year-old’s situation so Carroll could have a number of offers to ponder.
Allardyce worked with the striker at Newcastle in 2007/08 and then signed the target man for West Ham, so he could be keen to work with him once more.
What is he thinking?
We trust Big Sam’s transfer strategy but moving for Carroll would simply be a disaster.
It is understandable that Allardyce is looking to a player he knows and trusts and it is clear from his short time at Albion that he likes a big striker to lead the line.
Interest in Christian Benteke in January confirmed that, as did the arrival of Mbaye Diagne.
Also, over the last several years in the Premier League, there has probably not been a better striker in the air than Carroll.
However, his days of being a nuisance to defenders are long gone.
He was described as an “animal” by Tim Sherwood on Sky Sports‘ The Debate when he rejoined the Magpies, yet he has gone on to score just once.
His legs are gone and he has rarely been fit enough to complete 90 minutes, having done so just four times since 2019.
As a result, we hope Big Sam has other targets in mind and Carroll is only offered a pay-as-you-play deal if we really get desperate.
