Kevin Phillips predicts West Brom clash v Chelsea

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has tried to be optimistic in his prediction for West Brom versus Chelsea at the weekend but can only see his former club falling to defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Albion return to Premier League action after the international break at lunchtime on Saturday but do so with a testing trip to West London to play one of the in-form teams in the Premier League.

Only three teams have won more points in their last five Premier League games while Thomas Tuchel’s men have only conceded once in that period.

West Brom, on the other hand, have failed to score in their last three, succumbing to one draw and two defeats in the process.

While Super Kev feels the Albion could get on the scoresheet at Stamford Bridge, he can only see Chelsea wining the game and has tipped them to emerge as 3-1 victors.

“Chelsea are flying and West Brom are not,” Phillips told West Brom News.

“They know it’s going to be a difficult match and don’t forget it’s at Stamford Bridge as well. I’d be very surprised if West Brom get anything out of it.

“I’m going to put a positive spin on my prediction and at least say that West Brom will score but can they keep Chelsea out? I just can’t see it.

“Defensively, Chelsea have been solid under Tuchel, I can see Chelsea winning 3-1.”

West Brom have not won a league game at Stamford Bridge since 1978 when Ron Atkinson was in charge.

Cyrille Regis, John Wile and Tony Brown were all on the scoresheet on that day in a 3-1 win for the Baggies, who ended the season in third place in the top-flight.

Albion could only wish to have players of the ability those three had in their team right now.

Sam Allardyce’s men are hurtling towards relegation back to the Championship.

With nine matches left to play, the Baggies are 10 points shy of safety with the worst goal difference in the league.

It will take a miracle for Albion to win at Chelsea this weekend.

It will take an even bigger miracle for them to stay up.

In other West Brom news, Phillips has urged the Albion to sign this left-back who might be available on a free transfer in the summer.
