Big Sam fears devastating consequences at West Bromwich Albion post relegation
West Brom boss Sam Allardyce has suggested that the club’s relegation could lead to massive job losses, which would be devastating news.
Ahead of Monday’s must-win game against Southampton, the Englishman hinted at the dire consequences of relegation, not just to the players and fans, but also to the backroom staff.
According to the Daily Mail, he said, “The people who would lose their jobs are what the players are responsible for — not just their own livelihood but other people’s livelihoods.
“It’s the club’s consequences and the people who work here — the offloading and redundancies that would happen.
“Cutbacks are devastating for a club that is relegated. I experienced it when I went to West Ham in 2011 after they had been relegated.”
New first for Big Sam
While the team continues to fight tooth and nail in every game, fans are already getting used to the idea that Championship football is coming back to the Hawthorns.
For all of Big Sam’s pragmatism and unblemished relegation record, it seems even a miracle won’t be enough to keep West Brom in the division.
Today’s game against Southampton, much like most of our games from now, is like a cup final.
After hosting the Saints, we have two tricky away games against Leicester and Aston Villa within the span of three days.
Newcastle United picking up points is only making matters tougher for us in the bottom three.
While they have a tougher run of games than we do, their final two games are against Sheffield United and Fulham – both sides in the bottom three.
Fulham have played two games more than we have, and if we manage to win our next two we will leapfrog them into 18th.
However, the gap against Newcastle is seemingly unassailable, and even the most ardent of Baggies fans would tell you we’re going to be relegated come the end of the season.
