Ally McCoist blasts ‘shocking’ decision in West Brom v Southampton
West Brom were denied a perfectly valid goal against Southampton and Ally McCoist was outraged by the match officials’ decision.
Mbaye Diagne turned in Darnell Furlong’s strike with his head but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR, even though the striker was not in an offside position.
The confusion occurred because Kyle Bartley, standing just behind his teammate, was narrowly beyond the last defender.
McCoist was aghast that such an error could have been made, and he tore into the match officials on talkSPORT Breakfast with Laura Woods.
He said, “What if they get relegated by a goal? It’s a shocking decision.
“There’s no doubt, this is the thing, they’re saying there is doubt but everyone can see it. Kyle Bartley looks as though he’s maybe half a yard offside but Diagne is not offside.
“It drives me absolutely mental when the linesman does not put the flag up when somebody is clearly five yards offside and then you’ve got him putting the flag up where it’s close and he knows that if there is a goal VAR have got an opportunity to correct it… and they don’t!”
Absolute shambles
The decision to chalk off Diagne’s goal simply made no sense, and it is the latest ridiculous decision as a result of VAR.
Ruling out goals for offside due to the tiniest of margins is one thing, but completely getting the player wrong is beyond unacceptable.
This is not the fault of VAR either, but those implementing it.
There is no excuse the officials or PGMOL can come up with to explain getting this wrong – they should apologise to Sam Allardyce and his team.
Diagne’s goal would have opened the scoring and if Southampton had instead grabbed the first goal we could have lost the match.
That simply cannot be allowed to happen and things must change soon.
McCoist is right to be angry, just as Jamie Carragher and Kevin Campbell were right to be bemused – Diagne too after being denied his third goal for the club.
Here’s hoping the officials buck up their ideas for the game against Leicester next week.
