West Brom Super Fans react to Super League proposals

This is part of a regular series from our panel of West Brom Super Fans. Each week, our Super Fans will deliver their verdicts on the biggest talking points and news stories around The Hawthorns.

The announcement of the European Super League has rocked the footballing world and West Brom Super Fans think it could have repercussions on the Baggies.

Some have pointed out the possible effect it could have on Guochuan Lai and his ability to sell the club, or at least get the £200m valuation he places on it [Daily Mail].

Others are naturally concerned about the financial hit the club could suffer, as a less attractive Premier League may cause a reduction in the TV money.

If it the breakaway does happen it could help Albion establish themselves as a Premier League club however, as six clubs leaving opens up space for more Championship teams and clubs like West Brom, who are a bit of a yo-yo side.

West Brom will be part of a meeting along with 13 other Premier League clubs on Tuesday, discussing the proposed breakaway.

They will likely produce a joint statement on the issue and hopefully reassure fans that there is a plan in place to counter this project.

That could mean expelling the big six from the Premier League or at least warning them off that prospect, or opening a dialogue that will persuade them against forming a Super League.

Naturally, our Super Fans feel passionate about the subject, and here is what they told West Brom News.

The announcement of the European Super League came at the worst time for Albion as the club is surrounded by uncertainty.

We do not know what league we will be playing in, who will manage us and even who are main players will be next season as several stars could leave.

Then there is the issue of ownership.

Lai wants to sell but as yet there is no buyer willing to pay £200m, and talk of a Super League risks the owner becoming even less involved from a financial point of view.

There is some small silver lining, though, as if the breakaway happens very soon we will probably still be a Premier League club next term, thus guaranteeing us revenue we would have missed out on.

Premier League status would make us a more attractive prospect for a buyer too, but if the Super League diminishes the reputation of England’s top-flight then that may not be the case for very long.

Like our Super Fans, we too are anxious to see the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting.
