Sam Allardyce blasts ESL and calls for sanctions against break away clubs

Sam Allardyce has slammed the European Super League idea, claiming it would have been “extremely damaging” for many, including West Brom.

Big Sam also suggests sanctions should be levied against the Big Six because they broke the rules, but did not state what punishment he would like to see handed out.

Like many, he is a relieved man that the proposals have crumbled so soon, but is concerned the idea could take on a new mould in future.

As quoted by BirminghamLive, he said, “In that format it’s dead, but in other formats it’s on hold.

“The devastating impact of what was said is far-reaching across the country, and it would have been extremely damaging.

“I don’t know what the sanctions can be, but if we break the rules, we get sanctioned.

“If I breach any rules, I get sanctioned. In this case they’ve broken the rules.

“They need to be looked at, what form of punishment I don’t know, but certainly if you’ve broken the rules then you need to pay for that.”

Punishment needed

We have been waiting to hear Sam Allardyce’s thoughts on this since the news first emerged, and he has not disappointed.

The Albion boss is never afraid to hold back, particularly when commenting on major topics, and we do not disagree with what he had to say.

The Super League would have had dreadful ramifications for the finances and reputation of the club, not to mention Baggies fans and supporters of other clubs.

Those involved have rightly withdrawn but they should not escape punishment – criticism is not enough for these owners to learn their lesson.

A fine is not appropriate as these clubs have far too much wealth – they will reportedly lose £8million each just for breaking their Super League contracts [Daily Mail].

But like Allardyce, we are not sure about what the appropriate course of action is.
