Chris Sutton slams Conor Townsend in West Brom clash v Leicester City

Chris Sutton has slammed West Brom defender Conor Townsend in the first half of the Premier League clash against Leicester City.

The left-back almost handed the lead to the Foxes, losing possession as the last man before Kelechi Iheanacho was stopped by Sam Johnstone.

It was an uncomfortable night for the majority of the defence, who were exposed numerous times by the speed of Leicester.

Speaking during live commentary of the game on BT Sport, Sutton slammed Townsend for nearly handing the lead to Leicester City.

“It was a really, really poor error defensively,” he said.

“Really sloppy error from West Brom (and Conor Townsend).”

Exposed.

If there is one thing you can’t do against teams like this, it is stumble on possession and gift them chances clean through on goal.

Leicester are good enough to dismantle any team in the Premier League on their day, and they proved that with ease in that shocking first half.

Townsend handed them the chance to take the lead, and although they didn’t take it, it started a period of one-way traffic, which ultimately lost us the game.

You can’t afford passengers in the Premier League, and although Townsend has improved significantly since promotion, performances like this one prove that too many are just along for the ride at The Hawthorns.

We need more quality in this side, not just in attack, but also in defence, just compare our options to those that fellow promoted side Leeds have, are Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling as gifted?

Serious questions need to be asked.
